Sony Open in Hawaii Preview

November 14th, 2008 by Administrator

Sony Open in Hawaii Waialae Country Club, Honolulu, Hawaii

Vijay Singh will look to defend his 2005 Sony Open Championship a week after losing to Stuart Appleby in a playoff at the Mercedes Championships. This is the first tournament of the season with a full field but there are plenty of big names missing as only three players from the Official World Golf Rankings top-ten are here - Singh, Adam Scott and Jim Furyk. One big name that is here will be the biggest draw of the tournament and no, I’m not referring to Tiger Woods.

Michelle Wie will be making her 3rd appearance at the Sony Open, her first since turning professional last October. When she turned pro, she agreed to multi-year professional relationships with both Nike and Sony and likely is going to be a permanent fixture here. She played this event last season as an amateur exception but failed to make the cut by seven strokes after rounds of 75 and 74. Making the cut this season is a definite possibility as she will once again have the backing of her native Hawaii fans.

The one big name missing is Ernie Els, who is recovering from knee surgery and is resting after playing three tournaments overseas already. Els was a fixture at the top of the Sony Open leaderboard, winning in 2003 and 2004, finishing 2nd last year, 3rd in 2001 and 5th in 2000. He and Tom Lehman are the only players in the last 10 years to have five top-five finishes. He won’t return until the Qatar Masters in the last week of January, where he’ll be defending his 2005 title.

Singh is no doubt the favorite being the defending champion backed up by his strong start to 2006. Last year was his third top-ten finish at the Sony and he has a trend going of playing better in each of the last six years, starting with a +1 in 1999 and topping it off with a -11 last year. His 269 last year was the highest winning score since Jeff Sluman posted a 271 back in 1999. Dating back to last season, Singh has placed in the top-ten in 17 of his last 25 events.

Charles Howell III finished third last season, his second top-five finish in this event. He finished 4th in 2002 thanks to a second round 62 that pushed him from 78th to 5th. It was the 11th time in tournament history that a 62 was carded but still is behind the all-time low tournament round of 60 by Davis Love III in 1994. Howell’s average score of 67.9 is second best all-time, trailing Els’ 66.7. After having two top-five finishes in his first two events last year, he achieved that only three times in his other 27 tournaments.

Appleby rides the momentum from the Mercedes Championships victory into the Sony and hopes to better his last performance here. He missed the cut in 2004, coincidentally which was also right after winning the Mercedes, but finished in the top-ten in three of his previous six starts. He had a runner up finish in 2000 behind Paul Azinger who ran away with a seven-stroke win. Appleby finished strong last year with five top-twenty finishes in his final nine events including a 7th place finish at The Tour Championship.

John Huston won this event in 1998 with a record score of -28 and he will be out to make the cut after missing the final two days last year with a 145. He has placed in the top 14 in five of his last eight starts here. He hasn’t won a tour event since the 2003 Southern Farm Bureau Classic against a field of mostly no name players. His best finish a season ago was a fifth-place finish at the 84 Lumber Classic, won by the new fan favorite Jason Gore, who happened to finish last at the Mercedes at +28.

Davis Toms is back for a second straight year after finishing 13th in last year’s event. He has played here only one other time in the last 11 years and that was in 2002 when he finished fourth behind Jerry Kelly, John Cook and Jay Don Blake. Toms is coming of a 13th place finished in the Mercedes and he really is the feel good story this year after suffering some scary heart problems last season. He fought back to play in the President’s Cup the following week and finished 6th in his very next tournament.

David Duval, whose five-year exemption for winning the 2001 British Open expires this year, returns to the Sony Open in Hawaii for the first time since 1995, his only appearance. He finished 14th that year and don’t be surprised to see Duval make a move this year. It might not happen at the Sony but stranger things have happened. He only made the cut in one event in 2005, but did finish in the top ten at the Dunlop Phoenix tournament in Japan.

53 rookies will be making the trip including Bill Haas and Ryan Moore, two players who could make an early impact. Els, Corey Pavin, Lanny Wadkins and Hubert Green are the only two-time winners in the 35-year history of this event but Els and Pavin won theirs in back-to-back years so Singh is in good shape to become the third to do so. This being the first full tournament of the season is an exciting time and with all of the storylines surrounding this event, it should be another memorable one.

The Fishing Equipment You Definitely Need

November 13th, 2008 by Administrator

So, you are done packing all the fishing gear for the trip? Are you sure? Whether you are a beginner or an experienced angler, there are some items that should be on your list. Here are the bare essentials:

- The rod - Of course you need a fishing rod. But, what type of rod will you take? When choosing one, here is some advice. Don’t head to the discount department store to purchase yours. Instead, go for a middle of the line priced rod that is comfortable, the right length and serves your purpose. If you plan to fly fish, get the right rod. - The reel - Yes, you need the right reel to match. Can you buy them together? Sure. If you are saltwater fishing, you need a protected reel that will not become ruined by the water. Again, as a beginner, middle of the road quality is needed. - The lure - These should be geared towards the type of fish you are expecting to catch. Live bait is a great choice if you don’t mind getting it. The best way to know which lures to use, though, in the artificial options is to ask those at the local fish shop what they have had luck with. Depending on the type of fish and the area in which they live, these individuals can help you determine what to purchase. - The line - You have to have quality line. Nothing is worse than catching a fish and then snapping the line because it couldn’t hold the weight. But, that doesn’t imply that you have to go with the most expensive one. Look for the right weight of line for your approximate weight of fish. - The cooler - The first hour won’t be that bad. But if you are going to stay out for several hours you will definitely need this one. Have the cooler ready with your choice of beverages.

Golf Swing Aids - Helpful even if you’re a Pro

November 12th, 2008 by Administrator

Many golfers practice a great deal, and still never achieve the swing that they want to possess. If this sounds like you, you may benefit from golf swing aids. There are many golf swing aids on the market today that will help you greatly improve your swing - in less time in most cases. Choosing the gold swing aids that are right for you, however, often presents a challenge.

One of the most popular golf swing aids in existence today is the launch monitor. These are showing up in more and more pro shops across the country and in other countries as well. These takes data from your golf swing to determine what club or clubs are best for you at certain distances, and even tell you how much spin you are putting on the ball. Personal renditions of these launch monitors are also available, and experts agree that the personal monitors are just as powerful as the more expensive ones used in the pro shops - but golfers need to learn how to operate them properly for best results.

Another useful golf swing aid is the golf swing speed monitor. This little box sits on the ground directly across from you, with the ball in the middle. It should sit about six to eight inches away from the ball. It measures the speed of your swing. Increasing swing speed is vital if you want to improve your long game, and this little gadget can help you do just that, by telling you whether your swing speed exercises are doing any good. Training clubs, which are much heavier than your regular clubs, are also good for swing speed increases. They also help build strength and range of motion.

Golf training clubs and elbow braces are also great aids. These help to train you not to break your wrists when swinging, and to keep your form with your elbows during the swing as well. There are also lots of different training clubs available to help with specific problems, such as slices, and plane devices designed to help you improve your swing plane. There are even mats that are designed to help you line up your shot for an improved game! If you can imagine it, it exists!

There are swing aids available for any swing problem that you can imagine. But do they all work? Well, some work for some people, others work for other people, and some don’t work for any people at all. Before rushing out to buy brand new training equipment, slow down and do your research. Talk to other golfers to find out what training equipment they have used, and what results they had with that equipment. Look for used equipment, and if it is reasonable, buy it and give it a try. You should also consider going in with some friends to purchase some training equipment that can be shared by a group.

Training aids are easy to find - both online and offline - but again, not all training equipment is right for you. Talk to a golf pro to find out what equipment you should consider, based on your skill level, and the specific problems you are having. Be careful - if the golf pro you are talking to owns the shop you are standing in - he is a salesman first, and a golf pro trying to help you improve your game second! Talk to other golfers before making a high ticket purchase!

The best information on the training equipment that is available will be found in online forums where golfers hang out - and on the course where golfers also hang out. You can look for customer reviews, but they may not be accurate - or even real. Talk to the real golfers who have really used the products to find out which golf swing aids are most likely to help you. Most golfers are very happy to help each other out with tips and advice - you just have to be willing to take it! Some golfers are a bit more stubborn and a bit more traditional - they don’t want to allow technology to enter into the game of golf. Most of the golf swing aids you will find do represent technology - but if this doesn’t bother you, you should definitely take advantage of what’s out there!

Hunting Knife and Sheath- How to Choose the Right One

November 10th, 2008 by Administrator

When choosing hunting knives, there are several things you can look for. For one, try to find a knife that feels comfortable in your hand when you are holding it. Maximum comfort is necessary when hunting.

Knives that feel too heavy, too light, unbalanced or bulky can become distracting and take away from your safety and the overall enjoyment of the experience.

Next, you will need to find a sheath that is secure and comfortable. Whether you want a sheath covering that is made of nylon, leather, plastic or any other material, you want one that feels natural to you.

Adjusting what area to secure your sheath is a matter of personal preference, whether it be at the ankle, leg or any other area. What matters most is that it is secured in an area that is easy and safe to reach.

It is also very important to make sure your knife is always sharp. If necessary, purchase a sharpening stone, just to be sure. Following all of these instructions will allow you to be as safe and comfortable as you can be while enjoying the sport you love.

Bill Ol’ Sarge Harris owns http://WWW.MilitarySurplusStore.com where you can find the guaranteed lowest prices on hunting knives. Stop by and Ol’ Sarge will give you a free pocket knife.

Pocket Rocket Bikes…just what are they!

November 8th, 2008 by Administrator

What are pocket rocket bikes? Basically, they are scaled down versions of street bikes, or racing motorcycles. They are not for use in roads and highways, in spite of their power, and they are just for fun or sport. Pocket rocket mini bikes can carry riders up to 220 lbs. in weight. While these are scaled down versions, many models are accurate reproductions of the racing motorcycles they copy in detail, proportion and craftsmanship. As such, you’d expect to see disc brakes, racing tires, lightweight alloy frame, twist grip acceleration control, and all the features you expect in a full scale bike.

There are electric and gasoline powered versions of these pocket rocket bikes. One might be satisfied with a model he buys, or have the option to purchase kits to modify it into an “open class” machine. Prices vary from some US$300 all the way up to US$3000. Electric versions are usually the “toys,” coming with a rechargeable battery and reaching speeds of around 15 mph. The gasoline powered versions of pocket rocket bikes, while still “toys” (still not for road use), can reach speeds up to 35 mph, or even 50 mpg for open class machines.

These gas powered motor bikes are the ones used in races. Pocket rocket bike races? Well, yes, there are such races. In Australia, it’s developed into a sport in itself. It’s called “minimoto” racing. This type of racing is said to have started in Italy, where a lot of car parks were converted for this. While other countries like Japan had their versions, the Italians developed the sport to the point of building and designing pocket rocket bikes specific to it. Pocket rocket bikes — toys or machines? Well, there could be no difference. Boys will always be boys, and men will always be boys.

playing fantasy sports - a beginner’s guide

November 8th, 2008 by Administrator

playing fantasy sports

Playing fantasy sports isn’t just for egg-heads anymore! Number chunchers beware, the age of the Internet has ushered in a whole new set of fantasy sports enthusiasts!

What used to take a degree in mathematics now just takes a couple of clicks from your mouse. The fantasy sports world is inundated by thousands of newbies every year as a result.

playing fantasy sports overview

playing fantasy sports lets you compete against others using real stats and performances from real athletes. Your fantasy team gains points for each stat category (check your league’s scoring to see how this is tabulated- every league differs) an individual player gains during the course of the real game.

Your points are then totaled, and (depending on scoring method used) you are credited with either a win or loss in a typical sports standings format

playing fantasy sports - the basics

join a league- search hiway-play for free or pay fantasy games to join. Follow each websites instructions for joining. Many offer public or private leagues. Private leagues need a password for entry, usually supplied by the league commissioner (the person who started the league)
draft your team- your league will have a section for you to rank players in the way that you would most like to draft them. There are several draft formats, but the basic info is that drafts are done in rounds, with each team getting one selection per round. Please check with your individual league to see what fantasy draft strategy they are using. There are many fantasy sports websites that offer free cheatsheets that rank players. There are also several draft formats, including live draft (players logon and draft in real time) and automatic drafts, where a softare program does the drafting for you (recommended for beginners).

play your team- once the draft is over, see which players you have, and either choose to start them in one of the designated starting spots (usually done by position), and choose to bench those that you do not wish to play.

let the games begin- check the schedules of the real teams that your players play for, then watch or keep track of their progress in the game. You get points depending on how they do in the real game. All your starting players’ totals are then totalled and added together. This total is then either copared to another team in your league (head to head style play) or against the totals of the entire league (rotisserie-style)

add/drop- depending on the sucess (or failure, or injury) of your players, you have the options to trade players with another team in your league, or drop a player from your team, and replace that player with a player from a pool of players that are not assigned to any teams in your league (free agents, or waivers). You may “tweak” your team throughout the season, hopefully picking up more productive players in the process. Please note that you may want to check a player’s performance history before dropping or adding. A few bad games does not neccessarily mean that player will not perform over the entire season!

Ningaloo Reef - Diving in Western Australia

November 7th, 2008 by Administrator

Ningaloo Reef is located at the western coast of Australia in an area which starts at Cape Range and ends at Shark Bay. It is widely known due to the fact that it has a large reef close to the shore which is unique and can not be found at other diving sites. This characteristic is what attracts most divers who come to the reef although there are several other characteristics which turn the area into a very interesting and attractive one not only for divers but also for visitors in general.

The main and most popular diving activities which visitors would be able to meet at Ningaloo are concentrated at the area of Coral Bay and Exmouth. Coral Bay and Exmouth are two Ningaloo towns which are separated by a distance of about 100 kilometers and in which visitors could choose from a wide variety of accommodation facilities.

The ideal season for visitors in general and specially divers to go to Ningaloo is between May to February, although it is recommendable for divers to learn more about each season and find out which time of the year is most suitable for them. Although this area is beautiful year around, there might be a few variations in the underwater environment which a diver could enjoy at one season than the one he could enjoy at another, and therefore each visitor should choose the season which best suits his preferences.

Ningaloo’s waters contain over 460 different reef fish species, an amount hard to find at other diving destinations. Besides this variety of fish, divers would also be able to enjoy a wide variety of vegetation and sea creatures as well as several different coral species, some of them very colorful and interesting to observe.

One great destination which divers who go to the Ningaloo area shouldn’t miss is the Kangaroo Island. This Island is ideal for those divers who like cold water diving and who wish to meet unique underwater creatures. Kangaroo Island waters contain sea dragons as well as beautiful reefs full of beautiful vegetation.
