The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers. The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers. This interpretation is then represented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a braille output. The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca. Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. More and more, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. Nevertheless, using a screen reader is, according to some users, considerably more difficult than using a GUI and many applications have specific problems resulting from the nature of the application. 2006: What’s In and What’s Out in the World of Weight Loss and Fitness

Part 1 of 2

I’m under the impression that the health and fitness world wants to keep the information that I’m about to tell you as a guarded secret. Why? So we don’t lose our jobs! If everyone one knows what’s new and hot in the industry, who needs to fitness professional, right?

Well, I’m willing to take the chance and actually give you the information–burst the bubble and tell you what the buzz is in our little world–so you can get a quick start in 2006 on your fitness and health goals and get yourself in the shape you’ve always dreamed of.

There’s always new and incredible products on the market and believe me some of these things are absolutely awesome! But others, as I’m sure you know are complete duds… how many of you still have the Thigh Master?

Which diet should you try? Which supplements should you buy? Where is everyone exercising this year?

This year it looks like some of the old standbys, I mean thousand year old standbys, are in, while some of the fads of 2005 are fading fast–soon to be outdated and replaced with what REALLY works!

So without further ado, here’s a list of what’s in for 2006 and what is old new from 2005.

Atkins is OUT

Sorry, no more pepperoni and sausage pizzas sans crust. The Atkins company went under last year after operating briefly without it’s fearless leader, Dr. Robert Atkins, who died of complications from a fall on the ice in 2004… which certainly is something I’ve always found fishy… considering the heart risks that come with his diet. Could something like an MI cause a sudden collapse on a slippery sidewalk? Hmmm.

The Atkins Diet helped people lose record weight, but also caused greasy skin, raised cholesterol and increased the chance of the yo-yo diet by promoting a way of eating that at best could be called “grossly unnatural”.

Raw Foods IN!

Carol Alt is our new leader. The raw food revolution has taken its hold due to her persistent work and promotion. More people are recognizing the benefits of raw foods and how they can increase your health.

Diets full of raw foods–30-40% is OK, 50-60% is excellent–will help lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, regulate blood sugar levels, help you lose weight and get you healthy in no time.

What’s so special about uncooked foods? Much of the cooked and packaged foods we eat are completely depleted of nutrients because of the way they are prepared. Raw foods not only keep the nutrients intact–just as nature wanted–they also carry live enzymes that your body needs for great health and fitness.

Get out and buy a book or two on how to cook (sorry… “prepare”!) raw foods, incorporate them into your diet once a day and you’ll see the difference immediately!

Bench Press OUT

Sorry, Muscleheads, the bench press is old news. Keep piling on the weight and watch your shoulders and rotator cuff disintegrate. Other exercises that are definitely out for the recreational lifter are: Leg Curls (Quad and Hamstring), Dead Lift and Military Press.

Each of these exercises are too often abused and cause a large number of gym injuries every year.

If you do them, be sure you have a trained fitness professional help you with your form… but even then be wary, they were most likely trained in the old school.

Body Weight Exercises IN!

Could you believe that exercises over 5000 years old could be making a comeback?!?!

There’s a reason they are still around… they work!!!

Exercises like the Upward Dog/Downward Dog, Hindu Squat, and the Sun Salute are coming back big time because exercise professionals have seen their benefits over and over and over again.

These exercises don’t isolate, they give you a full body workout stimulating all your muscle groups, your GI system, your nervous system and your heart. Talk about efficiency!

Hydrogenated Oils OUT!

No more Trans-Fats! We won’t take it anymore!

For those of you who don’t know, trans-fats or hydrogenated oils are what the big food companies have been putting in your snack foods since the 1960’s to extend the shelf life of their products.

These are modified oils that can take a serious toll on the body–scaring arteries and causing heart disease.

You body reads these fats just like it would other fats and distributes them accordingly… problem is, the trans-fats don’t do the same functions that the regular fats do… in fact they do NOTHING except hang around and clog your arteries.

Next time you pick up any packaged food, look at the ingredients. If you see hydrogenated oils (or partially) put it down and try a new product without them! Beware, this might be a trying task. Many of the foods we eat have been loaded with this stuff for years.

But if you stick it to the trans-fats, your body will thank you!

Weight Training for Weight Loss

Weight training combines building muscle tone and working
the cardiovascular system. Weight training tones your
muscles and raises your metabolism, which helps your
body burn more calories not only when exercising, but also
while you sleep.

Weight training reverses the natural decline in your
metabolism, which begins around age 30 therefore this is
something to think about for all those who have reached that
age.

Working with weights can produce a great deal of energy,
and a full workout works almost all of the 650 muscles in your
body. Looking toward long-term benefits, weight training
strengthens bones, which can reduce your risk of developing
osteoporosis. This of course is of very big concern amongst
women, since osteoporosis afflicts women much more than men.

Many women worry that weight training will make them muscular
and bulky like a man but you must keep in mind that men and
women have different muscular structures, therefore weight
training will not develop big muscles on women, just toned
muscles.

Not only is weight training a routine that makes you
strong, it is a routine that trains the body to build muscle
instead of fat, takes stress off key areas of the body such as
the lower back, making you less prone to injury in that area.

Since high blood pressure or hypertension is a big concern with
those who are obese, it is welcome news that weight training
decreases your resting blood pressure.Weight training has also

It is best to start with a plan, which may be joining a gym
where you can regularly go to get a full workout, or purchasing
a home workout system that uses resistance instead of weights
but produces similar results. You must assess what type of
person you are, and make the appropriate decision from there.

If you like the idea of going out somewhere daily for your
workout, welcoming the change of scenery and benefiting from
the comradery of others who are also training, then you may want
to opt for a gym membership. However, if you know you are the
type that enjoys working alone and will not work out unless its
in the convenience of your home where you do not have to get
dressed and go out, then the home gym system option is for you.
Only you can make this assessment of yourself.

NutriSystem: Weight Loss is All in the Planning

Beef Stroganoff with noodles…basil chicken with tomato
sauce…tuna casserole…turkey with dumplings. These might not
sound like diet foods, but they are, according to the
NutriSystem diet program.

The program offers separate pre-packaged food plans for women
in general, men in general, diabetics, and vegetarians. And,
according to medical research, dieters who use a plan such as
NutriSystem lose 30 percent more weight over a period of four
months than people who follow other weight loss programs.

Visit the NutriSystem website at www.nutrisystem.com, and
you’ll find a number of testimonials from successful dieters.
For instance, there’s Janet Z, who lost 24 pounds and is quoted
as saying, “My favorite thing about the NutriSystem program is
the convenience of it all, the variety of food, and the fact
that this Italian girl can eat pasta every night if she wants
to!”

And then there is Nicole S., who lost 28 pounds. Nicole states,
“I thought it was extremely easy. I carried them in my bag and
there were plenty of choices. I never got bored and I’d say that

chili with beans. Satz himself is partial to the chicken marsala
for his main entrée and chocolate crunches for dessert.

Backers of the NutriSystem program say that it offers
appropriate nutrition, enabling an individual to lose weight
without sacrificing valuable nutrients. The food portions are
determined for you, so you do not have to worry about eating too
much. Also, since the food is sent right to your home, the
program receives high marks in the convenience category.

There is no need to visit a NutriSystem center, although you
can call a weight loss counselor for support. Membership is free
and includes unlimited counseling, newsletters, online classes,
a computerized weight control diary, and online chat rooms.
Also, when you enroll in the program, you will receive a
complimentary diet analysis.

With the NutriSystem program, you end up eating 55 percent of
your calories from low-glycemic carbs, 25 percent from protein,
and 20 percent from fat. The plan is low in sodium and derives
less than five percent of its calories from trans and saturated
fats. The meat tends to be lean and low-fat, while whole grain
foods are also plentiful in the meal plan. Under NutriSystem’s
guidance, you’ll eat more than four cups of fruits and
vegetables a day–the amount advised by federal health officials.

Another advantage to the NutriSystem program is that it enables
you to plan meals far in advance. Generally speaking, you begin
with four weeks’ worth of products, enabling you to have enough
meals and snacks for a full 28 days. If you choose, however, you
can order as much as ten weeks’ worth of food.

Primary advantages to the NutriSystem plan include the fact
that it is highly easy to use, since you will have food
delivered directly to your door. The menus also tend to be rich
in nutrients, making the meals a healthy choice. One of the
major disadvantages, however, is that you will not learn how to
shop for healthy food or learn how to prepare it, since the
choices are made for you.

Also, you may not like the NutriSystem food, which may make it
difficult to stick with the program. In addition, the program
can cost you hundreds of dollars–an investment you might not be
prepared to make. Moreover, some health experts say that you are
far better off working with a registered dietician than trying
to follow a prepackaged meal plan.

Diabetes And The Long Term Dangers

Diabetes has hidden dangers that begin before diagnosis and continue to worsen if certain steps are not taken to prevent the complications that are the true, “killers” in terms of diabetes.

Statistics show that there are around 18 million diabetics in America, both Type 1 and Type 2. It is amazing how many people, diabetics included, who have no idea what dangers a diabetic faces over their lifetime. A diabetic, all things being equal, lives almost 10 years less than their non-diabetic counterpart on average.

Why do diabetics life shorter life spans than non-diabetics? The answer is both simple and complicated. Simple in explaining in general terms, complicated in the medical sense. Without traveling the complicated route in this article, I will try to give a simple, straight forward answer to the above question. Diabetics live shorter lives than non-diabetics because of diabetic complications.

What Are Diabetic Complications?

Diabetic complications are chronic medical conditions that begin to affect the body of the diabetic. These complications are brought about mostly by a condition the medical community had named, “Advanced Glycation End products” which is simply, “excess sugar” saturating the inside of the cells of the body. This condition also called AGE for short includes coronary artery disease, vascular disease, blindness, kidney disease, retinopathy (blindness) and loss of feeling in the hands and the feet (peripheral neuropathy) among others.

Diabetes in the early stages does not produce symptoms. Unless found during a routine medical exam, it is possible for a diabetic to remain undiagnosed for years. It is during these years that the beginnings of diabetic complications can gain a foothold due excess sugar in the cells (AGE). The statistics show there is the possibility of as many as over 5 million people going about their normal lives while having undiagnosed diabetes.

Are Diabetic Complications A Certainty?

While the current consensus is that the formula for diabetic complications Diabetes + Time = Complications. What this means is there is a much higher potential of a diabetic becoming diagnosed with one or more diabetic complications over time. This is partly due to how well the individual monitors and controls his/her blood sugar.

Drastic rises and falls of blood sugar can be hard on the body and the excess sugar present in the cells create havoc on the different nerves within the body as well as the capillaries, veins, and arteries. The evidence to date show that excellent control of blood sugar and an active lifestyle goes a very long way in preventing and/or slowing down the onset of diabetic complications.

The Different Types Of Diabetes

There are two types of diabetes - Type One and Type Two. Type One attacks children and young adults and is characterized by the pancreas failing to produce insulin which is a hormone that breaks down sugars and starches while converting them into energy. Type Two occurs usually later in an adult’s life and is characterized by the pancreas being unable to produce enough insulin due to several factors, obesity being one of them.

Around 10 percent of diabetics are Type One while the other 90 percent are Type Two. The major difference between the two being that Type One diabetics are completely dependent on insulin and take daily injections while the Type Two’s have both those who require insulin shots while others can rely on oral medication and/or changes in diet and exercise.

The Risk Factors Surrounding Diabetes

There are several risk factors that can push a pre-diabetic into full blown diabetes.

1) being overweight.

2) family history of diabetes,

3) lack of adequate exercise.

4) history of gestational diabetes (occurs during pregnancy and usually disappears after delivery).

5) certain ethnic groups

People over 45 years of age and has one or several of the risk factors mentioned above should be screened for diabetes each year, preferably during an annual medical exam. It has been shown that people with these risk factors comprise the majority of diagnosed cases of diabetes each year.

What Tests Help Diagnose Diabetes Cases?

There are two, main tests used for determining whether or not a person has a glucose intolerance:

1) Fasting Plasma Glucose Test

2) Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

Both of these tests can determine glucose intolerance which is where blood sugar is higher than what is considered normal. This is not always an indication of diabetes however.

Can The Onset Of Diabetes Be Prevented?

People with the above risk factors can go a long way toward preventing the development of full-blown diabetes by making significant lifestyle change. What are lifestyle changes? Changing unhealthy diets to more blood sugar friendly ones, doing enough exercise to help offset increased blood sugar levels and keep the body healthy and losing weight especially if considered obese by the medical community.

If you are pre-diabetic you need to stay on a strict diabetic diet. Ask your healthcare professional for a diet that meets that criteria and limit cakes, candy, cookies, and other things made of simple sugars. Eat small, nutritious meals and eat 5 times a day instead of only three.

If you are already diagnosed with full-blown diabetes, you should follow the same diet while under the meticulous care of your healthcare professional. Keep your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar within proper limits and have your eyes checked every year.

Diabetes can contribute to blindness, kidney disease and heart disease. Complications caused nearly 70,000 deaths in 2000.

What Can The Diabetic Look Forward To?

Diabetic complications can be prevented or lessened for a longer time period by paying serious attention to lifestyle. A diabetic who eats right, keeps his blood sugar in control and within accepted limits, exercises and gets proper rest can expect to have a quality of life that is much higher in terms of the pain and suffering that diabetic complications brings into the lives of diabetics who do nothing to change their lifestyle.

What begins to occur in the diabetic who starts to develop complications because of uncontrolled blood sugars over time is a life filled with the possibility of becoming an invalid, either blind, an amputee, or suffering renal failure or a heart attack.

The above paints a rather grim picture if lifestyle changes are not adhered to. Research has shown that the diabetic that keeps their blood sugar within acceptable limits and follows a healthy, diabetic lifestyle that has been shown to be effective against diabetic complications stands a much better chance of not developing many of the complications their less than dedicated counterparts do.

There is a new derivative of thiamine (Vitamin B1) available now that is showing great promise in greatly reducing the excess sugar in the cells of the diabetic, the process known as Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGE).

Is Benfotiamine Effective Against Diabetic Complications?

Benfotiamine is a lipid soluble derivative of thiamine. Japanese researchers developed benfotiamine in the 1950’s and later patented it in the United States in 1962. No one in the US medical community paid much attention to it at the time. For the past 12 years in Europe it has been used for neuropathy, retinopathy and other uses.

The chemical name and formula for benfotiamine is: S-benzoylthiamine-O-monophosphate (C19H23N4O6PS). It wasn’t until a group of researchers in New York at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University released the results of their research in 2003 in Nature Medicine Magazine did the rest of the world begin to take a look at this substance.

Benfotiamine is unique and was reported by Michael Brownlee, M.D., as showing much promise in preventing nerve and blood-vessel damage in diabetics. Every diagnosed diabetic has been told by his/her healthcare provider that diabetic complications are the true killers in terms of diabetes.

The Health Care Crisis - and a Solution

We are presently facing a health care crisis that is getting more dire every day. Health care costs are increasing so rapidly that many companies who offered free health insurance to their employees are now passing a lot of the high cost on to their employees. Other employers are dropping their health care plans altogether because they have become too expensive. Millions do not have health insurance because they can’t afford the premiums.

There are many reasons that this situation is escalating out of control.

One reason is that the primary emphasis is on treatment of the symptoms of disease. There is too little emphasis on prevention of disease.

Most people don’t take care of themselves well enough, partially due to insufficient knowledge on how to prevent disease. Many people tend to eat too much and exercise too little. Many others have habits which impact their health, such as alcohol or tobacco.

We have an aging population. We live longer, but require more health care to accomplish that, partially due to insufficient attention to our health in earlier years.

Health care insurance encourages people to neglect their health because they think they can rely on a quick fix when they need it.
