Exercise And Your Anaerobic Threshold

If you’re like most people you’re looking to get the most out of a workout that you possibly can. However exercising to build endurance requires a different approach than exercising to lose weight. To get the most out of your workout you need to know what your Anaerobic Threshold or AT is.

Your AT rate is an individual number that varies from person to person, and can even change as your body becomes stronger over time. To better understand AT we need to take a look at your heart rate. Your heart is expressed in beats per minute, the maximum rate at which your heart can safely operate is known as your Maximum Heart Rate or MHR and is an average value taken over a few minutes. Originally your AT number was believed to be between 80 to 90 percent of your MHR. However since you were taking a percentage of an average the value was often inaccurate, and a more precise measurement was needed.

Professional athletes who need to know their AT undergo a series of tests. They ride a stationary bike or run on a treadmill. A mask was placed over their mouth to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide at different levels of exertion. The results are processed using computer programs and yield very precise results. These tests are costly and time consuming and not necessary for most people.

A less sophisticated method that is reasonably accurate is the talk test. You will need to take your pulse or use a digital pulse meter or watch. When you are jogging or using a stationary bike and you can talk normally without speaking in short burst you are in your aerobic metabolic zone. As you increase the intensity and you still talk but not as easily this is the lower edge of your AT zone, make a note of your heart rate. Pick up the pace again as your breathing becomes more rapid and talking becomes more difficult and you start to speak in short bursts this is the upper range of your AT. For best results perform this test a few times on different days and average the results.

Once you know your AT range here are tips to help you get the most out of your exercise routine. Exercising below your AT range will burn some fat, and will help you improve things like blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Exercising in your AT zone will give you the maximum fat burning benefit. You will use the most calories if you can spend most of the time that you exercise in this range. Exercising above your AT zone will boost your strength and endurance. The amount of fat you will be burning will be lower than if you were exercising at a lower AT level. People who exercise vigorously and have minimal fat loss are exercising above their AT level.

Once you know what your AT level is getting the most out of your workout is easy. You monitor your heart rate and adjust your intensity to raise or lower your heart rate keeping you in your desired range. People who exercise regularly should check their AT level every 6 to 9 months and make adjustments as needed.

How about starting with a good pair of sneakers and just putting one foot in front of the other? Yes, it’s that simple. Just one step at a time for sixty minutes a day, every day, can make all the difference in the world between whether you feel lousy or whether you feel energetic and full of life.

Sure, with all the contradictory information, you may be confused about which foods to eat. It takes a little bit of digging to sort fact from fiction when it comes to choosing the best health- and life-supporting foods.

However, there is absolutely no confusion when it comes to the benefits of moderate exercise. And the best and easiest form of moderate exercise is none other than walking.

You know that consistent walking helps your heart, lungs, bones, and muscles. You know that walking cleans out the fat and cholesterol in your blood vessels and builds up your immune system. You know that walking helps prevent life-threatening and life-robbing diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and strokes. And you know that walking burns those excess calories—calories that get stored right where you don’t want them - on your hips, thighs, stomach, and bottom.

Without question, if you want to add life to your years and years to your life, consistent walking, or another form of moderate exercise, is a “no-brainer.” And anyone with two able legs can do it.

The question remains: if the value of walking is so obvious to all of us and is simple to do, then why don’t we all carve walking into our daily lives? Why do we continue to ignore the well-known fact that over 250,000 Americans die every year from a sedentary lifestyle, and that one of those people could be you?

In fact, look at yourself in the mirror right now and ask yourself why you still haven’t incorporated a daily walking or exercise program into your own life.

Perhaps you, like so many Americans, are just too darn good at the “yeah, but” game.

The “yeah, but” game goes something like this: “I would go for a walk today—yeah, but it’s too cold,” or “yeah, but it’s too hot” or “yeah, but it’s too rainy,” or “yeah, but it’s too sunny,” or “yeah, but I’m too tired or too stressed or too sad or too late or too early or too busy.” If one “yeah, but” doesn’t work, there is always another “yeah, but” positioned and ready to take its place.

Does the “yeah, but” game sound all too familiar? How often do you play the “yeah, but” game?

Do yourself a favor—quit playing the “yeah, but” game; a game in which there is only one loser—you. Quit “yeah-butting” your way to premature disability, disease, and death.

Once and for all, make a commitment to your body, your health, and your life, and put that commitment into action. It’s as simple as going to your closet every day (no, not just three times a week or just on those balmy, sunny 70 degree days) and putting on those sneakers. Don’t even think about it—as Nike says, just do it!

And the next time you are tempted to say to yourself, “I would go for a walk—yeah, but I just don’t have the time,” remember that walking does not take time, it gives you time.

Walking gives you time when it counts the most—at the end of your life.

Pro-active is doing everything possible to establish and maintain good health (preventive maintenance). Re-active is waiting until the body falls apart, then taking massive desperate action through Toxic Drugs, etc. to try to reverse or cover up the problem.

Which way makes more sense to you?

The answer is obvious. I am surmising that the people I am talking to are pro-active and want to work on preventive maintenance. I have been talking this talk and walking this walk for several years now and I am convinced that being pro-active is the way to go.

If you are in good health now, and want to stay that way for years to come, you need to find an “exercise guru” to help you get to your next fitness level.

Exercise has been touted as one of the closest things to the “Fountain of Youth” we have.

When you exercise you can expect:

• Lower Blood Pressure
• Lower Cholesterol
• Lower Blood Sugar
• Increase in bone density
• Increase in energy
• Elevation in Mood
• Increase in Stamina
• Loss of inches
• Loss of Fat
• Increase of muscle mass
• Rise in Basal Metabolism
• Decrease in Arthritic pain

If you are taking prescription drugs for any of the above ailments, exercise can require your health care provider to reduce or even eliminate some or all of those medications. YIPPEE!

Aren’t these benefits enough to motivate you to start an exercise program?

Even if it’s been years since you did anything physical, you can actually regain your strength and stamina. You of course, have to start out slowly and progress at a steady rate. As you do this, you will become addicted to exercise and it will become a part of your lifestyle!! Invite friends to exercise with you. Put on a video and have a friend join you and make it a part of your day.

If you are really determined and want to join a club or group….don’t hesitate. You’ll be surprised how many other people at the club or gathering are just starting out and it’s so much fun to workout with your peers!!

I am completely blown away when I watch three 90+ year old women complete a 45 minute non-stop Chair Aerobics class.

You might laugh when you hear “Chair Aerobics” thinking to yourself that sitting in a chair and moving is not much of a challenge. Think again!

I invite anyone of any fitness level to attend a “Sittin’ and Sweatin’” Chair aerobics class and not feel challenged.

If you cannot imagine yourself sweating then I feel sorry for you. Sweating is a very important part of exercise. Your skin can be categorized as your third kidney and it is used to eliminate toxins out of your body. If you don’t sweat, you are really stressing your kidneys, by making them do all the toxin elimination.

Think of sweating as a way to make your “inner terrain” healthy by getting rid of all the toxic wastes that have accumulated over the years!

So, being pro-active is taking responsibility for your own health and fitness. The simple task of incorporating more movement and/or exercise into your life will put you on the road to a healthy lifestyle and a feeling of happiness.
