Botox

Botox, otherwise known as Botulinum toxin or Clostridium botulinum bacterium was created in the early 1800s. It had been used beginning in the 1950s for the treatment of medical conditions; such as Blepharospasm, Migraine, and Achalasia, however, the FDA did not approve it for cosmetic purposes until April 2002.

The substance is considered to be lethal, however, it is still widely used for cosmetic application. It has been linked to death, but the use of Botulinum in its pure and isolated form makes it safer. Many cases of death were not linked to using it for cosmetic application, and in several cases fake Botox was utilized.

Why do people use Botox? America has the urge to stay forever young. This is where Botox helps mask the aging process. Tiny injections of the protein can be put into the face or neck to smooth out wrinkles. Bye bye crow’s feet! It’s an easier process than having plastic surgery. Botox takes minutes and is nonsurgical, but probably not best for the needle shy.

The result from cosmetic application is four months. Use of Botox can be done every four months to maintain results. If not maintained, frown lines and wrinkles may appear as they did before treatment. Only allow an authorized health care professional to treat with Botox, as it is potentially dangerous. Those specializing in cosmetic procedures are apt to have more experience in this area.

Even though it is a cosmetic procedure, it does not mean there are no side effects. What is expected? Common expectations are temporary eyelid droop and nausea. There will be some pain, inflammation, tenderness, bruising, swelling, and redness. More serious complications can be allergic reaction and paralysis of facial muscles. It’s important to contact a doctor if unexpected reactions occur after getting a Botox injection.

Injections are considered low cost, especially compared to a face lift. To put it in perspective, Botox costs just as much in some cases as teeth whitening. If a little pick-me-up is needed, then Botox might be a cost effective option. It’s best to consult a doctor before venturing into any cosmetic procedure, no matter how invasive. Also, check around with different doctors for prices, however, cheaper does not necessarily result in the best results.

Whatever the choice is, to use Botox or not, know the benefits and consequences and make an educated decision.
