On Being Self-Employed: Dealing with the Current Recession

June 20th, 2009 by Administrator

We’re all tired of hearing about the credit crunch, particularly if you’re one of the laid-off. You can turn off the radio, but you can’t get away from the actuality that the United Kingdom is in a deep recession and it will be with us for some time.

Yet, there are always means to help yourself get a job. The established means of looking for a job are not so good when you have 120 other job seekers applying for the very same job. Reading the newspaper, browsing the unemployment office, etc - you’re just part of the masses looking for a job in this uninventive way.

Much more effective is to become proactive in places your competition (others seeking jobs) are in fewer numbers. Nowadays many firms publish job vacancies on their website, so use Google and type in key words to identify local companies. Vary your keywords between location only e.g. jobs in Tamworth, Staffs, UK, and location and job type e.g. cleaning jobs in Tamworth Staffordshire.

One more idea is to work for yourself - become self-employed. What we’ve found out over the last year or so is that large corporates can go bust very quickly. Self-employment puts destiny in your own hands, which is something no employee of a firm can ever say they have. An important point is that you choose the kind of career you love as you will need to be motivated.
