Swimming Pools - Let’s Get Wet

April 26th, 2009 by Administrator

“Beverly Hills. Swimming pools. Movie stars.”

That line from the theme song of the 70’s sitcom “The Beverly Hillbillies” shows us how far we have come in relation to swimming pools. Swimming pools were a real status symbol back then. Now nearly everyone has access to at least one, if not in their own backyard, at least at the local YMCA or gym.

We take swimming pools for granted. If you are reading this article on the internet, you probably have a lifestyle that would admit you to not just one, but any of several swimming pools almost any time you’d like. Either your apartment complex has one or your friend does or you go to the local city pool. What a luxury!

It wasn’t so long ago when running water alone was a luxury for only the very rich. Now we build concrete lined holes in the ground and swim around in it!

Did you ever read “Stranger in a Strange Land?” or “Dune?” In Heinlein’s classic science fiction novel, “Stranger in a Strange Land,” the Martian, Mike, is just blown away by the fact that people swim in water. He loves it. Frank Herbert’s “Dune” is the story of a desert planet so dry that even perspiration is recycled through a suit that everyone must wear. To collect water in a pool is an unthinkable decadence.

But in our swimming pools, be they backyard or public, we filter the water, we chlorinate it to prevent algae and we clean the pool weekly or more to keep it clear and sparkling. That’s a far cry from the country watering hole or stream where you didn’t know what you’d find swimming next to you. Yes, those old-fashioned swimming holes have their charm, but I’ll take my sparkly clean water any day, thank you!

Don’t Get in a Tangle

April 24th, 2009 by Administrator

OK so I get the 3 meter kite out …unwind the lines and find there’s a thousand twists in the lines. The wind grabs the kite and there’s a perfect tight ball of knitting which takes me 3 hours to unravel!

After this happened for the third time I came up with a way of packing a kite based on the parachute approach. This allows me to use the kite without tangles every time!

OK here’s what you do.

The next time you go to pack the kite away attach the flying lines to your ground stake - you can actually use those “giant cork screws” you can buy at Wal-Mart for tethering a dog too…..

Allow the kite to stream down wind.

Go to the kite and stuff it loosely into the kite bag.

Then stuff the lines loosely on top of it section by section until to arrive back at the handles. Leave the handles secured to the outside of the bag.

When you come to use the kite again reverse the procedure.

Attach the handles to the spike, slowly pay out the kite line, extract the kite from it’s bag and allow it to inflate then check all lines are clear.

Walk back to the handles and you will have a kite ready to fly with no tangled lines …in seconds.

The Loyalty And Faith Of Nascar Fans

April 23rd, 2009 by Administrator

NASCAR fans are known for their loyalty to the sport, their favorite drivers and each other. When the race comes to town, the streets are lined with vendors selling a wide variety of merchandise sporting the image of drivers and their cars. Something else has been seen at races in recent years, Christian groups reaching out and spreading the Word.

At many races, Christian fans hold early morning prayer services at roadside stands and in camp grounds. Some offer refreshments and religious literature to fellow fans. Some read the Bible in small groups and others listen to sermons. They are looking to spread the word and gather new members. The fellowship of the race environment offers a good place to do just that.

Many of today’s NASCAR fans come from typical Christian backgrounds. Many are from the south, which is known for its Evangelical Christian population. Preachers have been seen praying for and even with drivers prior to a race. This approach makes sense as fans are known for their loyalty to each other and their favorite drivers. They may be more willing to accept literature from a fellow fan than from a stranger.

Corporations have figured this out long ago. This is why they invest a huge amount of money in sponsoring fees. The advertising is very effective and the company is sure to get a good return on the investment. Fans will shop at Lowe’s or Home Depot and drink Coke or Pepsi based on their favorite drivers and racing teams.

In cities across the country, people travel long distances to attend these races. Some will choose to eat in restaurants where their favorite driver has been seen eating in the past. People pour into stores when they hear that a driver is in there. Others book rooms a year in advance to stay in hotels known to be used by the drivers.

The drivers are getting into the act too. Several drivers including Jeff Gordon, Darrel Waltrip, Jimmie Johnson and Terry LaBonte own car dealerships. The names of the drivers are proudly displayed on the building and in advertising. In each of these dealerships, sales rose dramatically after the driver became affiliated with the dealership.

This loyalty doesn’t stop at merchandise, hotels, food, or even car dealerships. Die hard fans also purchase products that drivers use on their cars. If it’s used by a driver, they want it too. This includes paint colors on cars and products used to wash and wax the vehicles.

There is even a popular headlight restoration product that is used by many NASCAR drivers. New Lite Headlight Cleaner and Restorer works quickly to restore cloudy headlights to like new condition. New headlights are a costly expense. You can save literally hundreds by restoring your headlights, rather than purchasing new ones.

Clean, new looking headlights make your car look newer. The look isn’t the only consideration. Restoring cloudy headlights is an important safety concern, especially for night driving long distances to your favorite race. Clear headlights allow you to be easily seen by other drivers and give you a better look at the road ahead.

Next Portsmouth Manager - A Soap Opera In The Making

April 19th, 2009 by Administrator

The race for the vacant Portsmouth manager’s market has provided fascinating reading over the past week or so and over £13 million has been traded on Betfair. Frenchman Alain Perrin was sacked on 24 November after steering the club into the Premiership relegation zone without a home win all season.

Perrin had only been manager since April 2005 but had won just four matches out of 21. He replaced an equally unimpressive boss in Velimir Zajec, who mustered five wins in 21 matches and was himself only in charge at Fratton Park for five months.

Neil Warnock was the first manager in the frame and eager punters backed him into 1.20 (1/5). The former Notts County, Huddersfield and Bury manager had been in charge at Sheffield United since December 1999 but had made no secret his desire to manage in the Premiership. Warnock was set to hold talks with Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric until he decided to remain at Brammall Lane on 1 December. His Premiership dream may yet come true as The Blades are sitting pretty in one of the automatic promotion positions in the Championship.

The best was yet to come. Harry Redknapp, who left Portsmouth for bitter rivals Southampton, revealed in a crunch meeting with Saints chairman Rupert Lowe that he had always felt more comfortable at Portsmouth after he was refused permission to speak to his former employers about a possible return. Redknapp’s position became untenable and he walked away from the club he joined just 12 months ago.

Over £11 million was traded on Redknapp, with punters eager to “buy money” backed him at odds as low as 1.01 (1/100) although some shrewd players managed to get a few pounds on him at odds as large as 59/1 previously, creating a no-lose betting situation.

However, there was yet another twist in this tale. Mandaric refused to pay Southampton the £220,000 compensation they demanded - the remainder of Redknapp’s contract, since the former West Ham boss was still technically under contract, leaving him in limbo.

Mandaric has now expressed interest in other managers, with Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez, under-pressure Rangers manager Alex McLeish and former Hearts manager George Burley all in the frame.

Despite this and numerous claims in the press that Redknapp has no chance of a surprising return to Fratton Park, he is still trading as low as 1.30 (3/10).
