Tension In Your Golf Swing?

March 31st, 2009 by Administrator

It’s often said that you shouldn’t have any tension in your swing. This isn’t true. You need tension, the thing you don’t need is strength. There’s a big difference between the two, and if you can’t distinguish between them, it may be stopping you from reaching your potential.

To get the feeling of both tension and strength, simply stand up and hang your arms at your side. To feel tension, extend your arms downward to the ground as far as they go. As you do this, you will feel tension in your arms because they are stretched to their longest point. Now to feel strength, make two fists and squeeze as hard as you can. These are two totally different feelings that have two totally different affects on your swing.

This feeling of strength is what most inexperienced players feel when they hit the ball and they mistake it for tension. They get this feeling because they’re trying to hit the ball so hard that their arm muscles lock up. This feeling of strength is deceiving though because it also gives the person the feeling of power. If this feeling of strength is removed, the inexperienced player then thinks that they are not going hit the ball as far so, they immediately they tighten up again.

This feeling of strength in your arms will do two things to destroy your swing:

1. It will narrow your swing arc because the feeling of strength makes your arm muscles contract or buckle through and past impact. The narrower your swing arc, the slower the club will swing.

2. It will inhibit the hinging and re-hinging of your wrists also resulting in a slower clubhead speed. The harder you hit, the tighter your wrists will which will also slow the club down.

So how is the clubhead speed increased if you feel tension?

1. To achieve the tension I am talking about, you must allow the arms to be stretched out to their fullest through and past impact. To stretch them out means your muscles cannot be turned on. You have to keep them loose. To understand the increase in arc width, imagine that your golf swing is like picking up a weight and swinging it in a circle on a piece of string. The weight represents your club, the string is your arms, and your body is your hand that is twirling it. As the weight swings, the piece of string will get tense. This is because the weight is stretching it to its longest point. This maximizes its arc. It’s this wide arc that allows the weight to swing its fastest. Remember, feeling strength in your arms pulls the clubhead closer to you because it contracts your arm muscles. If your arm muscles contract, it would be like the piece of string getting shorter as you spin the weight not longer. The shorter the piece of string, the slower it will swing.

2. Loosening up the arms, and keeping the muscles turn off, will also loosen up your wrists. To understand how the wrist hinge will help to create clubhead speed, imagine opening a door with rusty hinges and one with well oiled hinges. Obviously, the well oiled hinges will allow the door swing open and closed faster. If your wrists were “well oiled” it would result in more clubhead speed as well. To get the feeling of wrists that are too tight (rusty hinges), try clenching your fists again. This time pay attention to your wrists and how locked up they become when you feel strength in your arms. So allowing the arms to stretch out through and past impact not only maximizes the arc width, but it also loosens your wrists.

Now that you know how detrimental strength is to your swing as opposed to tension, take a look at a few areas where you are likely to feel it:

1. The first area is your grip. Your grip pressure at set up should be 2 out of 10 where 10 is the tightest.

2. In your set up you should feel like your arms are just hanging and there is no strength in them. If you don’t start with them stretched out how are they going to stretch out through and past impact?

3. The takeaway is the next area to check. If you take the club away fast, you are turning on your arm muscles. You should take the club away slow and smooth to avoid this arm strength. To feel this, just flip the club upside down so you are gripping the club where the clubhead is (flipping the club this way makes it really light). Now as you take a few practice swings, you can immediately tell if your arms are tightening. Make sure you take the club back slow enough that you don’t feel your arms turn on then apply this same feeling to your actual takeaway (once you flip the club around to the correct position).

4. The next area is just as you are going to start your downswing. Remember, human nature is telling you to hit the ball hard. If you follow you instincts, you are guaranteed to feel strength in your arms. So from now on, don’t think about hitting anything. A great way to achieve this is to imagine you have a magic marker taped to your clubhead and there’s a huge piece of paper you are swinging against. Your objective is to draw the widest circle you can on the piece of paper as you swing down and through past impact. If you can think of this image you will definitely increase the width of your arc and feel the tension in your arms from the club pulling them out.

5. The final area is just before contact. People feel they have to give the shot just that little extra help to get it in the air. In doing so, they also turn on their arms. Remember to keep the image of the weight swinging on a piece of string in your mind as you swing your club. The weight swings freely around an axis pulling the string to its longest point. Your club should be allowed to swing freely around your body so it too, is allowed to swing to its widest point. You don’t have to help the ball get in the air.

The next time you go to the practice range, try to get this new feeling of tension that I have described. If you’re doing it properly, you can tell because you will probably hit the ground behind the ball a few times. Don’t avoid these fat shots. If you try to avoid them, you will do so by tightening your arms again. Just keep hitting shots (even if the club hits the ground behind the ball). Within 20 balls, you’ll get used to your new, wider swing arc and start to hit some of the most solid shots of your life!

Until next time,

Will A Night Golf Tournament Ruin Your Course?

March 29th, 2009 by Administrator

The first thing you have to remember about your Night Golf event is that it is not a PGA Major event. It is simply a different way to play golf than you normally do. With that in mind, how you set up your course is up to YOU! Some ideas include:

• Move your tees - use an area normally not used for your tee box. Move it to a patch of grass in front of the normal tee, to the left or right of the forward tees - anywhere to minimize wear and tear on the tees. If you must use the tees for the Night Golf event, make sure there is divot mix for the players to use.

• Get the maintenance staff out early! - The morning after your Night Golf event, send someone out with a divot mix bucket (make sure they are labeled if you use different types of grass on your tees than you do in your fairway). Have the staff cover each hole you played the previous night - make sure that they have trash bags and ball mark repair tools for the greens.

• Limit the refreshments until after the Night Golf event - Admittedly, this practice helps to increase laughs on the course during the event. However, it could be the catalyst which lets the guard down for care of the course. You might want to think about letting the players have 1 or 2 beverages prior to the start, and then the participants will want to hang around afterwards talking about their experience. In addition, make every attempt to not allow alcoholic beverages on the course the players.

• Take Hazards out of play - Be sure to mark bridges, creeks, lakes and other potential hazards with light sticks or other methods (Candle bags, pumpkins, etc.).
Light sticks come in plenty of colors so maybe you use red or blue to mark hazards. As in the aforementioned point, if there is a lake or creek in front of your normal tee box, simply move it to the other side for the Night Golf event.

• Limit your exposure - You don’t have to use every hole in your course or feel obligated to start at Hole #1. 4 or 5 of the easier holes that lack hazards and can bring the players back to the club house after the Night Golf event is fine. Another thought is keeping some of the staff available to join groups for the event if they are not familiar with your course.

In summary, just use some basic Common Sense when setting up your course for Night Golf. This will increase the fun factor and the participants inquiring the date for the next tournament.

Golf and Life, A Story About Your Future Success

March 29th, 2009 by Administrator

Preparing to tee-off on the par 4 tenth. (Internal dialogue, with a whisper) “Man! I’ve been playing my ass off all day and just barely making par.” You swing, catch a nice one, slightly off center, but very long. Unfortunately, you get a terrible bounce; the ball shoots to the left and nestles down in the spaghetti of the deep Bermuda. (Internal dialogue) “I should have a 100 yard pitch shot to the green, instead it’s gonna take every thing I have just to get it there.” You hit a world-class, Tiger Woods like shot out of the rough. The ball looks beautiful in the air and it’s just about pin high. You yell, “Bite!” The ball nearly hits the stick, bounces twice, but unfortunately releases off the green onto the back fringe.

Wow! Even after the bad bounce off the tee shot and the insanely good shot out of the rough you should have a gimme from about three feet. Instead you’re gonna have to negotiate a 40-foot double-breaker just to try to nuzzle it up close. You take a deep breathe hit a nice smooth putt and watch for what seems like 1 minute and a half as the ball tracks toward the hole. (Internal Dialogue) “Man! That thing is tracking pretty well and with good speed. If this thing goes in, I’m gonna love myself so much.” A very humble “Go in” leaves you lips, just loud enough for the rest of the group to hear. The ball rims the cup and spins out about four feet to the left. Aaaauugh!

(Internal dialogue…you summarize) “An amazing 300-yard tee-shot down the middle, takes a bad bounce and ends up in the rough. Then, a freakishly good shot out of the deep stuff almost hits the flagstick but releases some 40 feet pass the hole. To top it off, I hit possibly the best putt of my life. It tracks like a demon, but rims out heartbreakingly. And, the guys are not going to gimme this 4-footer either.” You stand over you putt and confidently pound it into the back of the cup. Par’s always good, but you feel you deserve better.

Whether or not you’re an avid golfer you can relate to this story. We’ve all had times in our lives when we’re trying so hard and executing very well, yet things are not going our way. Just hang in there. Soon, things will seem to magically go your way. You’ll hit the “Zone” of life. You’ll achieve more in just a few months than many achieve in a lifetime. The time will come very soon when your tee shots will have an extra 20 yards on them and straight. Your approach shots will consistently be pin-high, even in gusty wind. And, the hole seems to vacuum your ball on any putt hit even remotely close. It’s coming baby! You’re gonna fly like a birdie.

Your Best Golf Swing Can Really Happen

March 28th, 2009 by Administrator

Your best golf swing is achievable. If you’re like most golfers, you’ve been on the hunt for your best golf swing for a long time. The key question is…have you found it yet? If not, it’s time to take a different approach to achieve it.

We know swing mechanics are very high on the list. And to achieve this takes a general understanding of the golf swing. You don’t have to become a fanatic to learn proper swing mechanics, but if you don’t have a clue, you might want to get a book or take a lesson from a credible teaching pro.

When it comes to accomplishing your best golf swing, equipment doesn’t even play a role. Remember…we are talking about your golf swing, not distance or power.

The approach you need to take to finally get your best golf swing is one that is focused on “your machine”. You! Your body dictates how effective your swing mechanics will be.

Do you agree?

When you have physical limitations such as lack of core strength or tight hamstrings; it will be virtually impossible to make your best golf swing on the course. You may hit a good one every 10 or so swings, but you won’t be able to consistently repeat it for 18 holes.

Every golfer has his/her own limitations they need to find out about. One person could be very tight from a golf flexibility standpoint, and the next person could have weak shoulder muscles and can’t control the club at the top of the backswing.

Getting a physical assessment specific to golf is your first step in achieving your best golf swing. Once you recognize what your limitations are, you can devise a program to improve them.

Now you’re on your way to a repeatable swing that holds up for 18 holes and under pressure too! The minute you decide to work on “your machine”, you won’t look back. You will become a powerful and very accurate golfer, who is beating the pants off the rest of the players in your foursome.

Golf will become enjoyable again!

You will no longer be in search of your best golf swing!

My First Casino Experience

March 26th, 2009 by Administrator

I was one of the many college students who caught the poker bug in 2003 at the age of 18, but didn’t make my first trip to a casino until I was almost 22 but never played casino games there. One of my college room mates, who had initially made fun of my poker online playing, had become a casino rat and spent most of his time there instead of in class. I finally took the one hour trip with him on a weekend, and sat down to my first live poker session ever.

It was a total adrenaline rush, and I was so sure I was going to bust out in the first hour, so I decided I would just fold for a bit and get a feel for the table, since a 100 dollar buy in meant a lot to me. First hand I picked up pocket sixes, and folded. Next hand, ace ten suited, folded. Third hand, pocket aces. The poker gods were determined to bust me in the first five minutes, I decided, and I raised it up to four times the big blind. Another player in middle position reraised, and the button flat called. I raised all in, the reraiser snap called, and the cutoff thought about it, showed ace king suited, and folded.

I flip the aces, my opponent flips the kings, and I take down 250 on my first hand. When the board came out, it was just a blur to me, and I was numb as the pot was being pushed to me. I forgot to tip the dealer. It was such an incredible feeling, and I absolutely loved it. I played out the rest of the session and booked a small win after playing a few hands absolutely terribly out of position and giving back some of my winnings.

You will always remember every detail of your first casino experience- from the faces at the table, to the big hands, to the smell and even the feel. You may have many future experiences that are more exciting for different reasons, and what was once exciting may dim as you become more desensitized to the live action, but a casino is a totally different experience from a home game or internet poker, and is definitely something every gamer needs to try at some point.
