Power Golf Exercises That Are Proven To Add Distance

January 30th, 2009 by Administrator

Power golf exercises are a unique set of exercises that you do not do in a gym on machines, nor do you lift heavy weights. For that matter, you can do simple power golf exercises right in your home with minimal equipment.

You see…to improve the power in your golf swing, you need to look at the mechanics that create the power.

It’s not your arms swinging the club as hard as you can! It’s not your legs driving your body through the swing! And it’s not swinging some funky 50 inch shaft with a 600cc titanium head either.

It’s quite simple!

The power in your golf swing is your CORE!

Your core is the engine to your swing. If your core is weak or inflexible, you will never be able to hit a powerful tee shot. This is harsh…but very true!

The modern power golf swing is one of being “connected” with your upper body. Not letting your letting your arms get separated from your body. Rotating your upper body as a whole, over a somewhat stable lower body will produce maximum power at impact.

So the perfect power golf exercises involve rotational movements with resistance in your core area. The are many exercises you can do that will dramatically improve your driving distance and power…and no gym required!

A simple power golf exercise for your core is my Seated Twist w/Dumbbell: * Sit upright in your chair. * Hold single dumbbell straight out from chest with arms fully extended. * While keeping your head focused straight ahead, rotate your arms to the right, then to the left as far as you can go both ways. * Do this non-stop for 20 total rotations. * Pause for 15 seconds and repeat 2 more times.

At first you will feel very restricted in your midsection. That’s a sign of how limited your rotational flexibility really is. But do this exercise daily and you will see improvement quickly.

The next time you step out onto the course, you’ll blast your drives up to 20 yards further!

As you can see above…the key is ROTATIONAL exercises with resistance, whether it be a single dumbbell, exercise tubing or even a weighted golf club.

Doesn’t matter what you use, as long as it is up to 5 pounds in weight and you can handle it easily in both hands. If you’re already in good shape go for 10-15 pounds and increase your rate of speed. This will both improve your “fast-twitch” core muscles and also your range of motion for a bigger backswing and a complete follow through.

So you see…I wasn’t fibbing! It doesn’t take a gym or fancy equipment to do effective and proven power golf exercises!

Baseball Prediction: The 2006 White Sox Will Settle For The Wild Card

January 24th, 2009 by Administrator

Detroit is unstoppable; let’s face it, fellow Chicago White Sox fans.

The Sox have the second best record in all of baseball, in the National and the American leagues. But Detroit will edge them out for the Central Division Championship this year.

That’s my prediction and I’m sticking to it.

I say this because:

(1) The Tigers are managed by Jim Leyland, and I think that fact is going to give them the edge in at least five crucial games down the stretch. His experience and poise under pressure will keep the team playing at a fever pitch.

(2) Detroit’s schedule in July is more favorable than that of the Sox. The Tigers are playing more games against weak teams, so I believe they’ll pick up another game or two on their division rivals in that month, alone, giving them a four game lead going into August.

(3) Detroit is hungrier. I heard the fans at Comerica Park going crazy on every pitch the other night against the Astros, and fan support will constitute the 10th player on the field for the team for the rest of the season.

(4) Detroit is managing around injuries very well, platooning Pudge Rodriguez and others as they need to. The Sox have had a few hit the disabled list, but manager Guillen’s abilities to shuffle a lineup card may not be as sharp as Jim Leyland’s.

(5) The White Sox believe they’ll continue to beat Detroit, head to head, as they’ve been able to do this year, to date. I don’t see that lasting, because Detroit has to find its confidence building as they start pulling away in July, and any mystique the Sox have will have rubbed off by that point.

And of course, the Wild Card championship is not a lock. The Yankees are going to be in the race. They’re managing very well to be in second place in both the Eastern Division of the American League, and in the Wild Card race, given their injuries.

If they make a solid trade or two, or get some of their personnel back for August or September, they’re going to be tough competition for the Sox.

Stay tuned for more predictions!

Blackjack, Not Poker, Tilting

January 20th, 2009 by Administrator

Unlike poker, in a game dominated by the odds, your emotions can often get in the way. This is very evident in the game of blackjack, especially when things aren’t going your way. Going “on tilt” is an expression connected to poker, but it is just as applicable when you’re playing blackjack.

Being on tilt means that you’re so angry that it is negatively affecting your judgement, causing you to make bad decisions, ones that you wouldn’t make in a normal state of mind.

A losing streak in blackjack as a great way to go on tilt. Sometimes things just fail to go your way no matter how well you play. The dealer gets a few blackjacks, all of your hits are busting you, and all of a sudden your bankroll is just about gone.

The next thing you know, you’re saying things like “I’m due for a good hand” and “I’ve got to hit this”, and making bad calls, standing when you should hit, hitting when you should stand, and raising your bets is a misguided effort to catch up. Needless to say, the casinos love it when you go on tilt.

When you find yourself getting angry and approaching tilt, it’s time to take a break. Leave the table for a bit, play some poker, collect yourself, and come back ready to rock.

Missleading Fund Names Wreak Havoc On Investor Returns!

January 20th, 2009 by Administrator

Mutual fund managers use fake fund names to part you from your money such that you cannot judge what a fund does by its name. Many funds have names that are outright misleading or even deceptive. In the late 1990’s, for instance, during the technology stock bubble, some portfolio managers took advantage of public’s desire to chase the latest fad by slapping “internet” in front of their fund names.

The chances of that happening now are possibly lower. As of July 2002, the SEC requires funds to have at least 80% of their assets in securities that their fund name implies, up from 65% previously. This new rule is forcing funds that called themselves something like the America’s Government Fund to either dispose of East Asian government debt if it exceeded 20% of fund assets, or to change the fund’s name.

Likewise for funds that call themselves an equity income fund but have 25% of assets in stocks that paid no dividends. More than five hundred funds have had to change their names because they failed the 80% rule. Invesco’s Blue Chip Growth fund, for example, is now called just growth fund, since 60% of its holdings are in technology stocks, and many of those can hardly be called blue chips these days.

The 80% rule still allows mutual funds to invest in just about anything up to 20% of holdings. Why don’t you just avoid the entire problem by buying shares of an indexed mutual fund when you only have a selection of mutual funds to select? For this reason I strongly recommend that if you can only buy mutual funds, as in the case of the 401(k), then restrict your purchases to indexed funds such as the Vanguard 500 (VFINX). The best you can do is to learn to select individual stocks in your Roth IRA or individual account.

Approaches to Investing

January 19th, 2009 by Administrator

Here is a small summary of the three major approaches to investing:

1. Fundamental Analysis

Truly superior companies exist, are sometimes undervalued by markets, and can be identified by mostly financial research. Earnings and dividends, stock prices and markets can be adequately forecasted. All these can be identified by analysis of their financial statements. Buy where forecasted price is greater than current price by a satisfactory margin.

2. Technical Analysis

Patterns in past price behavior of a security in question and the overall market can be used to direct profitable trading strategies. Some technical analysts also refer to a company’s fundamentals in combination with its technical indicators.

3. Efficient Market Theory

No possible market-beating investment strategy exists. All information relevant to a stock’s long-term price performance, including information not publicly available, is already present in the stock price for any given period of observation.

And here are two more “truly real” ways to approach investing:

1. The Proud Way and

2. The Humble Way.

The proud way is for those who believe that they’re smarter than everyone else and can use their insights and abilities to make superior investment choices.

The humble way is for those who believe that they don’t know everything. This humble approach leads them to study what has worked over the long term and then use it.

The path to achieving investment success is in studying long-term results and finding a strategy or group of strategies that make sense.
This strategy is the humble way … And it does work!

Reading Lanes

January 19th, 2009 by Administrator

As you become better at bowling you will need to learn how to “read the lanes”. This is what you do when you understand what lane conditions you are bowling under and how they are changing. Lane conditions can be the most frustrating part of bowling as you get to be a better bowler. For the new bowler, who will generally be working on getting the ball straight down the lane, lane conditions are not a big issue; however, as you improve your game lane conditions will come into play, and you will have to learn how to read the lanes.

Wet vs Dry

I guess I should discuss here the difference between a wet and a dry lane condition. Basically a wet or “oily” condition means that your ball will slide further down the lane than it will on a dry condition before it hooks. When you are bowling on a “wet” (oily) condition, your ball seems to slide down the lane and not turn over (hook). Sometimes, it seems to slide the whole way down the lane without ever hooking! When you are bowling on a dry condition, your ball will seem to turn over the minute it leaves your hand. This is a particularly difficult condition to deal with.

Fortunately, the normal shots that you will run into are neither of these extremes. They are something in between. But this is why it is important to practice… practice… practice… your bowling; preferably in different bowling centers.

If you become proficient in one house, it doesn’t mean that you are a “good” bowler, just that you are “house” bowler. By bowling in several houses you will be able to adjust to many different lane conditions. This is important if you plan on ever going to tournaments or even if you bowl on different nights.

Lane Conditions

When I think about lane conditions, there are several things that come to mind. First off, the lane conditions when you start bowling have to be figured out. Secondly you have to adjust to changing lane conditions as you bowl. Finally you have to be aware of who you are bowling with and where they are throwing their ball on the lane and how.

Let’s take these one at a time.

Beginning to Bowl

The lane conditions when you begin bowling are usually one of two types: Fresh oil (the mechanic has just oiled the lanes) or used oil (a league or, worse yet, open play has just been bowling on the lanes). When you get to the house to bowl, you should be aware of whether you are bowling on fresh or used oil, although this really shouldn’t effect the way that you approach the lanes.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that just because you are bowling on fresh oil the shot will be wet. Different bowling alleys use different amounts of oil when they run their machines leaving a wet or a dry condition. Sometimes it even depends on what league or tournament is coming in as to how the house will oil their lanes.

Also don’t make the mistake of thinking that because you are bowling on used oil, the lanes will be dry. Some houses put a lot of oil down so that the condition won’t break down quickly. Also on some different types of lanes (synthetics for one), the condition tends to stay the same for a long period of time.

So now you are saying… “If I can’t make a judgement call based on what I see before I bowl, what do I do when I start bowling?” Here’s the answer: Start bowling with an open mind as to what you are going to run into. Don’t base your thinking on what you see other people doing (unless you know their style and it is close to yours).

The worst thing you can do when you start bowling is assume that the lane condition is wet or dry. You know your shot better than anyone else, so you need to try a couple of things during practice to figure out how the lanes are rolling, for YOU. If you try to base your game off of somebody else, you will be forever changing what you are doing and never progress. This is why I emphasize that you need to practice on several different conditions.

Changing Conditions

As the night wears on, the shot will, more than likely, change. This is why you need to know your game and be consistent. When you throw the ball consistently the same, you can identify changes in lane conditions more rapidly. There is nothing more frustrating than not recognizing that the lanes have changed for 4 or 5 frames and then realizing that if you had changed a couple of frames earlier you could have shot better.

You must pay attention to each shot that you throw and know whether you threw it correctly or not. If you adjust off of a bad shot, then you will be lost for the rest of the night. When I do this, I usually just decide to “start over”. I start with the next frame and start where I started the night after practice.

Other Bowlers

Pay attention to where the other bowlers on the lanes that you are bowling on are throwing their balls as well. If you are playing the same area of the lane as someone else on your pair, this can lead to the shot changing more quickly. Sometimes I purposely shoot a different line than the rest of the people on the pair, just so that it doesn’t break down as fast.

Don’t change to an alternate line if you can’t carry strikes on it. It is more important to continue making strikes and adjusting than to avoid the changes. Changing conditions are a part of bowling, but if you can avoid the changes or reduce the amount of change that is certainly to your benefit.

Reading lanes isn’t hard, but it does take practice. The more you do it the better you will get at it. It is also an essential skill to learn to become a better bowler, to exceed the 200 average range. Always remember this, the more conditions that you practice on, the easier it will be to tell what kind of condition you are bowling on. So continue to practice… practice… practice… at several different bowling centers on several different nights.

Keep bowling and having fun!
